Italy: Charming city of Bologna ideal destination

Alexandra Bullard

Rome: Many British holidaymakers will have heard of Italian cities such as Rome and Milan, but this medieval city is perhaps one of the most underappreciated in the country.

Bologna is only a 2-hour flight from London Heathrow or Stansted and is known for being the ‘culinary capital of Italy.’

Nestled in northern Italy, this city has a magnificent history and offers a wide variety of attractions for food lovers.

Bologna has a multitude of historical attractions and hotspots that are some of Italy’s most photographed locations.

The city’s most unique religious site, Basilica di Santo Stefano, has been mostly preserved and unspoilt since the 11th century.

Another top choice for architecture lovers is the Basilica di San Petronio, which is Europe’s six-largest church.

This impressive Gothic structure measures 132m by 66m by 47m, and was one of the main locations that led to the creation of the leap year. Bologna is also home to one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Founded in the 11th century – around the same time as the University of Oxford – the university was famed for re-introducing the human practice of dissection, and allowing female students to enrol in the 1800s. Moving away from history, Bologna boasts an excellent food scene.

As you stroll around the cobbled streets, you’ll quickly see how Bologna is a meat lover’s paradise.

The city perhaps most famed for being the home to some of the nation’s finest dishes, such as iconic Bolognese and Mortadella sausage.

The city’s heritage collection of cured meats is reflected in their well-known delis and charcuteries, for example there is the well-known Salumeria Simoni restaurant.

Recently winning a Traveller’s Choice Award this year, this traditional delicatessen also serves up some of the best parmesan in the area.

One guest said: “Simoni is located at one end of a tiny street filled with grocers that sell cheese, salumi and fresh pasta. Staff were helpful and friendly. Definitely a “must-visit”.”

A city rich in history, a strong food culture and an exceptional love for architecture makes Bologna the perfect holiday destination.

You can also fly from London Stansted to Bologna which takes 2 hours to complete. You then get the same airport bus.
