Rome: The consumption of gelato in Italy registered an estimated drop of 20 per cent in June thanks mainly to the decline in tourist numbers due to the covid-19 emergency, reports Italian news agency Adnkronos.

The fall-off is the result of a survey undertaken by the Ixè Institute for Colideretti, the Italian farmers’ association, which says that in normal times the gelato sector generates an annual turnover of €4.2 billion.

Coldiretti estimated that there were 10 million fewer tourists – foreign and Italian – in circulation in Italy during June, with bad weather also a factor in the reduced consumption of gelato in Italy.
