Tokyo: Italy’s Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti won gold in the Nacra 17 mixed class sailing at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo on Tuesday.

The race at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour saw Great Britain take silver and Germany bronze. It was the first time in 13 years that Italy has won a medal for sailing.

The news comes two days after Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs and Gianmarco Tamberi won gold medals in sprint and high jump events.

Jacobs made Olympic history by becoming the first Italian to win the Men’s 100m final, succeeding Usain Bolt as the new fastest man in the world. He was also the first Italian to reach the 100m final.

On Monday Vanessa Ferrara won a silver medal for Italy in the floor excercise gymnastics event.

With the victory of the sailing champions, Italy has won 29 medals, surpassing the 28 medals it won in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2012 London games. Italy currently has a total of five golds, nine silvers and 15 bronzes.
