EU Special Representative for the Gulf Region Meets UAE Foreign Minister

Brussels: H.E. Luigi Di Maio, the newly appointed EU Special Representative for the Gulf region, met with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his visit to the UAE from 5 to 7 September.

Sheikh Abdullah and Di Maio discussed the friendly relations between the EU and the UAE, exploring opportunities for further cooperation across various sectors, including economics, trade, investment, energy, and climate.

Their discussions covered the UAE’s preparations to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Expo City Dubai later this year, as well as collaboration between the UAE and the EU on climate-related issues.

Mr Di Maio expressed his appreciation for the strong ties between the UAE and EU countries, while also extending his best wishes for the success of COP28 in the UAE. He emphasized the potential for this event to significantly advance global climate action and efforts to combat climate change.

The UAE Foreign Minister and the EU official also exchanged views on the latest regional and global developments.

Saeed Mubarak Al Hajri, Assistant Minister for Economic and Commercial Affairs, was in attendance during the meeting.

Mr. Di Maio is the first to be appointed as EU Special Representative to the Gulf region and tasked with strengthening our strategic ties with the Gulf region, prioritizing stability, security, and constructive dialogue. This marks a significant step in enhancing our partnership.
