Italy launches EU-funded migrant inclusion project

Rome: The EU-funded “LgNet2 – Network of Municipalities for Rapid Response and Emergency Inclusion Services in Disadvantaged Urban Areas” project, coordinated by the Italian interior ministry, is up and running throughout the country.

The project aims to assist migrants living in particularly vulnerable conditions in Italian cities.

It is being coordinated by the Italian interior ministry through the department of civil liberties and immigration alongside Italy’s association of municipalities.

The LgNet2 project aims to support activities in three spheres of action: projects for civic commitment, one-stop shops and mobile units, and housing. Its purpose is to deal with and resolve emergency issues related to the integration of migrants in Italy.

The interventions are being carried out in 16 Italian cities with a significant presence of particularly vulnerable and socially marginalized migrants: Bologna, Caserta, Florence, Genoa, Latina, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Perugia, Potenza, Rome, Sassari, Taranto, Turin, Trieste and Bolzano.

The project began with a questionnaire administered to a large sample of migrants and people working in the healthcare and social service sectors in Italy.

The research attempted to highlight social and healthcare needs, both unknown and expressed, and to anticipate new ones that may develop.

The project included the activation of three mobile units for aid and intervention comprising workers from the local healthcare authorities, the administrative body for Rome and the service sector.

The task of the mobile units is to find particularly vulnerable people coming from third countries to identify critical elements that could lead to better assistance and intervention.
