Ambassador Marilina Armellin’s remarkable diplomatic journey

Islamabad: In a journey that spans decades, new Ambassador of Italy to Pakistan Marilina Armellin – a graduate of the University of Trieste with a degree in International and Diplomatic Sciences since December 1, 1994 – has carved an impressive path through the ranks of diplomatic service.

After successfully passing the competitive exam, Ambassador Armellin was appointed as a Volunteer in the diplomatic career on September 23, 1996. Her dedication continued with a professional training course at the Diplomatic Institute from September 23, 1996, to June 22, 1997, leading to her role as Legation Secretary on June 23, 1997.

Over the years, Ambassador Armellin’s career unfolded with appointments such as First Vice Consul in Basel on March 8, 1999, and subsequent confirmations in various capacities, including as Consul in Basel on September 23, 2000.

She served as the First Secretary in Nairobi, starting on July 16, 2001, with subsequent confirmations in different roles, showcasing her versatility.

Ambassador Armellin’s journey continued with significant positions within the Ministry, including roles in the Directorate General for Italians Abroad and Migration Policies.

Her responsibilities expanded as she took on roles like Councilor of Legation on July 2, 2006, and Chief of Staff of the Directorate General for Italians Abroad and Migration Policies on November 6, 2006.

From December 2006 to June 2007, Ambassador Armellin pursued a professional development course for Councilors of Legation at the Diplomatic Institute. Her career continued to ascend, culminating in her role as Minister Plenipotentiary on January 2, 2021.

The apex of Ambassador Armellin’s diplomatic service includes her accreditation as the First Counselor in Washington on August 24, 2015, and later as the Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (O.A.S.) from September 15, 2015, with the title and rank of Ambassador.

In recent appointments, she served as the Special Envoy for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Caribbean countries on December 10, 2019, and took on the role of Head of Unit X of the Directorate General for Globalization and Global Issues on June 16, 2020. Notably, on September 2, 2019, Ambassador Armellin reported directly to the Director-General for Globalization and Global Issues.

Her most recent achievement came on January 1, 2022, when she assumed the position of Director-General for Latin American and Caribbean Countries, solidifying her role as a key figure in Italy’s diplomatic landscape.
