Avocado grower shifts part of its operations to Portugal

Lisbon: In light of water shortages in the Axarquía region, TROPS, a cooperative known for its avocado and mango production, is relocating a portion of its packaging operations to Tavira, Portugal.

The move comes as a strategic response to not only address environmental concerns but also to leverage the growth opportunities in the Algarve area. TROPS plans to expand its Tavira production centre from 4,000 to 8,000 square meters to accommodate this transition.

Since its inception in 1979 in Vélez-Málaga, TROPS has broadened its footprint beyond its original base, establishing presences in various Spanish locales like Granada and Valencia. The expansion into Portugal marks a significant step in the cooperative’s growth strategy. “The prosperous development of the Portuguese Algarve has been a determining factor in our decision,” stated Enrique Colilles, CEO of Trops, highlighting the move as a strategic initiative to adapt and thrive amidst environmental and market challenges.
