President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday acknowledged the role of the media in the country.

Expressing his thoughts, President Zardari said: “We celebrate the freedom of the media in accordance with the constitution.”

“Today, we celebrate the freedom of the media in accordance with the constitution, we commemorate efforts to create a safe environment for journalists. The media plays a vital role in addressing global issues, including climate change”.

President Zardari said: “Journalists face challenges worldwide, emphasizing the need for their security and safety measures. The country’s constitution guarantees press freedom”.

Stressing the need for upholding the media ethics, President Zardari said: “It is the responsibility of the media to adhere to journalistic ethics, prioritise national interests, and engage in responsible and accurate reporting. The media should play its role in combating fake news and promoting ethical values.”

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz had also underlined the importance of the press. “We salute journalists fighting the battle of truth worldwide,” he said.

The premier said, “Those who sacrifice their lives in Gaza are heroes of humanity. Fighting tyranny and bringing truth to light are lessons from history”.

Shedding on the light on the connection between media and democracy, PM Shehbaz said: “The press freedom and freedom of expression are the foundation of democracy. The country’s Press Freedom Index was improved to 7 globally.”
