Bulgaria: Greenhouse cherry season underway after fight against cold weather

r

Sofia: In the village of Samuilovo, Sliven, the cherries grown in greenhouses are now ripe, according to Kosta Petrov, the chairman of the “Bulgarian Peach” Association in Sliven. The owner of a nearly 3-acre greenhouse has started harvesting the cherries, which are being sold at a wholesale price of 50 leva per kilogram.

Last year, farmers began picking cherries around April 26, and the wholesale price was 32 leva per kilogram at that time.

The cold weather in early April this year forced fruit growers from the region to light fires in their gardens in an attempt to protect the trees from the cold.
