Bilawal Bhutto Zardari highlighted that Indian attack on civilian population, violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and unilateral holding in abeyance of the Indus Water Treaty – in blatant violation of the International law and modern rules-based system – could have dangerous consequence for the regional and international peace and security.

The delegation is a part of Pakistan ongoing diplomatic outreach to the international community on the deteriorating region security situation due to Indian aggression against Pakistan after the Pahalgam incident.

In his remarks, Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Musadik Malik, apprised the parliamentarians of the environmental hazards of holding the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance by India, threats to food security and survival of 240 million population of Pakistan, primarily an agrarian economy.

The delegation emphasized that Pakistan response to Indian aggression was calibrated, responsible and fully consistent with international law, including the right to self-defense under Article-51 of the United Nations Charter.

The delegation underscored Pakistan commitment to restraint, revival of the Indus water Treaty and initiation of a composite dialogue between the two countries on all outstanding issues, particularly the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

The delegation also met with the Speaker House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle at his office in London on Tuesday.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari apprised the Speaker of the deteriorating regional security situation following the Pehalgam incident. He conveyed Pakistan’s grave concern over India’s baseless and unfounded accusations against Pakistan, made in the absence of any credible investigation.

The delegation head drew attention towards India’s subsequent unprovoked military strikes, targeting civilians including women and children, and the holding in abeyance of the Indus Water Treaty, measures well recognized as violations of international law and established inter-state norms.

Underscoring Pakistan’s principled approach of restraint and responsibility, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reaffirmed the country’s commitment to peace, regional stability, and multilateralism. He emphasized that sustainable peace in South Asia cannot be achieved without a just and peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The delegation also highlighted the serious humanitarian consequences of placing the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, noting that it would set a perilous precedent and lead to the weaponization of water. They emphasized that India’s unprovoked aggression toward Pakistan must not be allowed to become a new normal as this would undermine the rules-based international order. It also stressed that the sanctity of treaties should be respected.

The Speaker reaffirmed the longstanding and cordial relations between Pakistan and the UK, spanning decades. He appreciated the wide-ranging contributions of the Pakistani diaspora to British society.

He reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to sustaining peace and stability in the region.
