Islamabad: In a forward-looking move that underscores the evolving role of social protection in Pakistan, Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, has announced plans to integrate climate resilience into the programme’s mission, setting the stage for a new era of environmentally conscious social welfare.
Senator Rubina Khalid shared this ambitious vision during a recent meeting with climate policy expert and Executive Director of Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan), Munir Ahmed. The meeting marked a convergence of two crucial national priorities — social protection and climate adaptation — under the leadership of a senator serving her historic third consecutive term.
Under the visionary guidance of Senator Rubina Khalid, BISP is poised to become a trailblazer in climate-sensitive social policy, setting an example for the region and reinforcing Pakistan’s resolve to build a more resilient, inclusive future.
Emphasizing BISP’s transformative impact on marginalized women, Senator Rubina Khalid reiterated the programme’s commitment to transparency, innovation, and inclusive growth, especially in underserved and climate-vulnerable regions. “We must ensure that our social protection frameworks are equipped to handle the emerging threats of climate change. The most vulnerable populations must also be the most resilient,” she stated.
Senator Rubina Khalid emphasized on the urgent need for institutional synergy between public bodies like BISP and civil society organizations such as Devcom-Pakistan to create scalable, sustainable models of resilience. Their dialogue concluded with a strong mutual commitment to further collaboration aimed at embedding environmental stewardship into Pakistan’s social protection architecture.
