Lisbon: Portuguese exports of fruits, vegetables, and flowers grew by 9.2% in value in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, reaching €1.288 billion (US$1.39 billion). According to Portugal Fresh, using data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), export volumes also increased by 8.9%, totalling more than 837 million kilograms.

The European Union remains the main destination for these exports. “The European Union is the main destination for fruits, vegetables, and flowers produced in Portugal,” said Gonçalo Santos Andrade, president of Portugal Fresh. He added, “Portugal is increasingly competitive” and “offers differentiated, food-safe, and high-quality products.”

Imports of the same products also increased in the first half of the year. They grew by 9.5% in value, reaching €1.486 billion (US$1.61 billion), €128 million more than in 2024. Import volumes rose from 1.240 million kilograms to 1.380 million kilograms, an increase of 11.2%.

“We need ambition and a solid commitment to unlock the enormous potential of the agricultural sector and reduce the burden of imports,” said Andrade. He highlighted cooperation between farmers and the concentration of supply as necessary strategies, alongside investments in irrigation infrastructure and efficient water management.

Portugal Fresh, Association for the Promotion of Fruits, Vegetables, and Flowers of Portugal, was created in December 2010. It currently has 112 members representing about 5,000 farmers.
