Karachi: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led Sindh provincial government has announced plans to establish electric and conventional bus manufacturing plants in collaboration with Chinese partners, following President Asif Ali Zardari’s “highly successful” visit to China earlier this month.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the discussions held during Zardari’s meetings in Beijing focused on industrial development, agriculture, renewable energy, and waste management. However, he underlined that the most promising outcome was the interest shown by Chinese investors in setting up bus assembly plants in Sindh.

“This step will not only improve transport facilities but also create thousands of jobs for the people of Sindh,” Memon said, stressing that Chinese investors were particularly attracted to the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone.

The announcement comes as Pakistan pushes ahead with its New Electric Vehicle Policy 2025-2030, which targets 30 percent of all new vehicles to be electric by 2030. With China already the world leader in electric mobility, observers see this collaboration as a natural extension of the Pakistan-China green development partnership.

The initiative also strengthens the outcomes of Zardari’s recent visit, where multiple MoUs were signed covering agriculture, environment, and transport. Analysts believe the planned bus plants could transform Sindh into a hub for sustainable urban mobility in South Asia, aligning Pakistan’s transport sector with global climate goals.
