PM urges UK to help de-escalate India-Pakistan situation

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott reaffirms UK’s commitment to working with Pakistan
Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday categorically rejected India’s baseless allegations linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam incident, during a high-level meeting with British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott in Islamabad.
The meeting was held in the backdrop of heightened tensions in South Asia following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which New Delhi has tried to associate with Islamabad—an accusation that Pakistan has firmly denied.
Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s position that any investigation into the incident must be transparent, impartial, and conducted at an international level. He extended an open invitation to the United Kingdom to join such a probe, highlighting Islamabad’s commitment to truth and regional peace.
“Pakistan will never take any step that threatens peace and security in the region,” the PM said. “We categorically reject any attempts by India to associate Pakistan with the Pahalgam incident without evidence.”
The premier also briefed High Commissioner Marriott on Pakistan’s perspective on the current regional situation. He underscored that while tensions are rising due to India’s provocative behaviour, Pakistan remains focused on its primary goal — economic development and stability.
“Peace is not only our priority, it is a prerequisite for development,” Shehbaz Sharif emphasized.
Shehbaz urged Britain to use its friendly relations with both Pakistan and India to help de-escalate the situation. “We hope the UK will play a constructive role in easing tensions and promoting dialogue,” he said.
In response, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott thanked the prime minister for sharing Pakistan’s position and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to working with both Pakistan and India for the sake of regional peace and security.
“We value our relationship with Pakistan and recognize the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving regional challenges,” the envoy said.
