Zhengzhou’s central urban built-up area surpasses 800 km²

Zhengzhou: Zhengzhou’s built-up area has increased. On May 7, a notice was released by the People’s Government of Zhengzhou Municipality detailing the growth of the city’s built-up areas. As of 2024, the built-up area of the central urban district has reached 822.30 square kilometers, and that of the entire city has grown to 1,431.65 square kilometers.
The size of a city’s built-up area is a key indicator of its development and construction level. The continuous expansion of Zhengzhou’s built-up area underscores the city’s strides in cementing its standing as a national central city, along with a notable rise in its urban capacity.
Earlier this year, the Zhengzhou’s Territorial Spatial Plan (2021–2035) was approved by the State Council. The Plan encompasses two levels: the municipal area, covering all of Zhengzhou’s administrative jurisdiction, and the central urban area, which includes the city’s main urban districts and the Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone.
Within Zhengzhou’s municipal built-up area, all counties, county-level cities, and districts are experiencing notable “growth”. The built-up areas by regionare as follows: Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone – 140.27 km², Zhengdong New District – 119.95 km², Zhengzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone – 75.27 km², Zhengzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone – 95.22 km², Zhongyuan District – 72.74 km², Erqi District – 74.75 km², Jinshui District – 88.26 km², Guancheng Hui District – 80.80 km², Huiji District – 75.04 km², Shangjie District – 34.65 km², Gongyi City – 105.47 km², Dengfeng City – 84.34 km², Xinmi City – 91.18 km², Xingyang City – 79.12 km², Xinzheng City – 136.35 km², and Zhongmu County – 78.24 km². The top five areas with the highest growth inbuilt-up area are: Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone, Xinzheng City, Zhengdong New District, Gongyi City, and Zhengzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone.
Zhengzhou is not only a mega city by name, but also interms of its scale and economic strength. In 2024, the city’s GDP reached 1.4532 trillion yuan, with a built-up area of 1,431.65 square kilometers and a permanent population reaching 13.086 million. In the first quarter of 2025, Zhengzhou achieved a GDP of 345.95 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year growth of 5.6%. The city contributed 23.1% to Henan’s total GDP, strengthening its role as a key economic driver for the province.
