Islamabad: In a historic development, the federal cabinet has approved Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s proposal to promote Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal.

The decision comes in recognition of his unparalleled military leadership during Pakistan’s recent victory in the Marka-e-Haq, following an unprovoked war imposed by India on the night of May 6 and 7.

Chaired by the prime minister, the federal cabinet meeting discussed a five-point agenda, including the country’s overall political, economic, and security situation, as well as budget proposals for the next fiscal year. However, the key highlight of the meeting was the unanimous approval of General Asim Munir’s elevation in military rank — a rare honour in Pakistan’s history.

The meeting noted that Pakistan recently went through a difficult phase in its history when innocent civilians, including women and children, were targeted. The PM is said to have met President Asif Ali Zardari and taken him into confidence on the decision to promote the army chief.

According to the cabinet, the promotion was granted to acknowledge General Asim Munir’s brilliant military leadership, bravery, and commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cabinet members praised the armed forces for defeating the enemy decisively and hailed the military’s efforts in protecting civilians and national interests on every front.

The cabinet also offered prayers for the martyrs of the conflict and expressed deep gratitude to the Pakistani nation for demonstrating unity and resilience during a critical moment in the country’s history.

The cabinet noted that army chief Gen Syed Asim Munir led the Pakistan Army with exemplary courage and unwavering determination. It acknowledged that the army chief effectively coordinated the war strategy and unified the efforts of all branches of the armed forces during the recent conflict.

In addition, the cabinet also announced that individuals who served in Operation Bunyan-un-Marsous will be awarded high-level national honours. Officers, soldiers, martyrs, war veterans, and individuals from various fields who contributed to the national cause will also be honoured in recognition of their services.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed the post-war situation and took cabinet members into confidence about the strategic and defence developments. Officials confirmed that the recent conflict was unprovoked and resulted in the targeting of innocent civilians, including women and children, by Indian forces.

Cabinet members also lauded the responsible role of the Pakistani media in promoting national unity and crafting a strong national narrative in the face of aggression.

In another key decision, the government has decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, recognizing his services and leadership during the recent conflict.

The federal cabinet stated that Pakistan’s military success has not only strengthened national morale but also enhanced the country’s global standing and credibility.
