Gwadar-Gulf Ferry project gains momentum with private sector proposals: A strategic boost to CPEC connectivity

Islamabad: In a development that may significantly enhance Pakistan’s maritime footprint and regional connectivity under the broader vision of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Ministry of Maritime Affairs received five formal proposals from private-sector operators to operate an international ferry service linking Gwadar Port with Gulf countries.
The development came during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, where technical, financial, and operational outlines of the proposed ferry service were reviewed.
The proposed routes aim to connect Gwadar with key Gulf destinations, potentially offering a cost-effective and efficient mode of travel and cargo transportation, especially for expatriate communities, traders, and religious pilgrims. The minister underlined the strategic significance of the project, stating, “This initiative will lower transportation costs, facilitate people-to-people contact, and enhance regional trade integration.”
He added that transforming Gwadar Port into a central maritime hub is aligned with Pakistan’s long-term vision for becoming a key player in international sea trade — a vision deeply embedded within CPEC’s regional logistics and transport framework.
The meeting also stressed the importance of addressing all regulatory, safety, and logistical requirements before launch. In a related development, the minister held a telephonic discussion with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who assured full provincial cooperation for the project and reiterated the importance of ferry links, particularly to Oman, in serving local populations and pilgrims.
The Balochistan government emphasized youth empowerment and skills development in the region, reaffirming support for the Pak-China Technical and Vocational Center, where 30,000 young individuals will receive internationally recognized training. CM Bugti declared Gwadar’s success as vital to Balochistan’s economic transformation, linking the project to broader CPEC initiatives.
