Islamabad: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said on Tuesday that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to announce the election schedule and date.

Elections were announced in January, with the power to decide the fate of the people and the country resting with elected representatives in the democratic parliamentary system. Continuity in the system is a guarantee of a stable economy, Bukhari said.

He emphasized that the caretaker government’s responsibility is to assist the Election Commission impartially. If elections become questionable, instability will arise. He mentioned that in March, the positions of Chairman Senate and Deputy Chairman Senate will be vacant. The President of the nation and the new Senators are elected by the Electoral College, comprising the National and Provincial Assemblies. There is no connection between the election season and dissolving alliances; it is the responsibility of the Election Commission.

Bukhari also stated that the alliance against the Pakistan People’s Party and cases are nothing new. He added that the PPP protected the parliamentary system from internal and external attacks through constitutional means. Those responsible for unconstitutional actions were removed from parliament through legal means, beyond the constitution and law. Bukhari stated that, apart from state enemies, they have faith in dialogue with political parliamentary forces.”
