Greece shortlists 1.5 GW of projects in 2nd BESS tender

Athens: Greece’s Regulatory Authority (RAE) has selected 48 projects with a combined capacity of over 1.5 GW as provisional winners in its second tender for battery energy storage capacity.

The list released by the agency contains proposals launched by 42 developers for projects totalling 1,556 MW/3,121 MWh. According to the data, 113 MW of bids by seven companies have been excluded from the competition.

Among the shortlisted candidates are domestic utility Terna Energy, Italy’s Enel Green Power, Motor Oil Renewable Energy (MORE), French Akuo Energy, Eunice and Faria Renewables. Some of the projects that failed to progress were launched by Greek industrial group Mytilineos, BayWa and Elpedison.

The final list of winners is due to be announced this week when the period for making objections expires.

Local media reports that Greece seeks to award 288 MW of battery storage projects in the ongoing tender, in which it cut the available subsidies to EUR 100,000 (USD 107,000) per MW. The first such call allocated 411.8 MW of capacity, offering EUR 200,000/MW of support. Bids in the maiden competition ranged between EUR 33,948 per MW and EUR 64,122 per MW.
